Hi all, Ive been following for a while, the forum has been great with the niggles I had with my ML320 (W163) which I've now sold and am now about to buy an ML420. But before I go and test drive it and check it over it'd be really useful to have a look through an owners manual/ service book so I know my way round it and all the switches, electronics etc. I can only find the US manuals online - so hope someone here has the UK version - please! Also any handy hints of what to look for will be appreciated. I'm not tracking that many issues with the 420; biggest being the 7G tronic box, which if not smooth and quick needs a software update?

I owned an ML 420 for seven month which had full Mercedes history and had only one lady owner before me and the following are my own personal experiences: Good: The engine is an absolute peach and the torque for overtaking matched that of my W211 E55K. Compared to other 4x4's it sat quite low (mine had Airmatic) which gave it a good stance imo. The interior layout was very car-like which I preferred but the wife didn't.

Good on fuel compared to the other V8 diesels I've owned (Audi's the worse and RR Sport was in the middle), I regularly achieved over 30mpg on a run and low to mid 20's locally. The only time I saw late teens was in the depths of winter and driven short runs. Bad: The quality of the interior materials was quite poor, the plastics felt cheap and the seats weren't very hard wearing.

Pretty much every week there was a new problem, mechanical and electrical, the auto boot opening had a mind of its own, it would just randomly blow the same light bulbs for no apparent reason. They are heavy on juice. SPX was getting a good 5mpg more than me. The tailgate issue is common on many MLs. The great thing about the 420/450 is they look like any other ML to almost everyone. However, they are so quick for a big 4x4 that they can catch many off guard.

Do not want to temp fate but have had no gremlins within mine. The reason that you cannot track many issues is because they are a rare car. Think there were about 500 ML420;s registered and a couple of dozen ML450's? Drive one and you will be smitten.
