Stopped by the Harley dealer Saturday to pick up a new 2018 service manual. Don't plan on any service work other than maintenance but had a $100 gift card the company gave at Thanksgiving, anyway. All they had was the 2017 edition on the rack. So, I ordered a 2018 edition for $129.00.

I told the guy the 2017 would probably be fine as the 2018 and 2017 M8's were the same in the Road King. He looked at me, raised one eyebrow and said 'that isn't a safe assumption'. I asked if he knew any differences and he said, 'dude, I just sell parts and accessories'. Very interested in getting this book and thumbing through it. Every service manual they sell has the potential for taking away possible service work. Typically stores stock what they expect to sell.

If that dealer doesn't sell many service manuals, I can see them not wanting to tie up too much money or shelf space on them. I ordered mine from Boardtracker, it was about 20% under list price.Well, I don't plan to get too deep into anything.

Just basic this and that. I've taken on too much before on my truck and had to end up towing it to my diesel guy. He makes me feel like I tried to cheat him, but he's a good dude.

Wow.that's double my 2013 serv manual. But they are worth having! I would also get the parts manual. They show part numbers and have great exploded views of various assemblies. Regardless, you should have these in your tool box!!!Another 'you would think'. For that price the service manual should include part numbers and exploded diagrams. Normally, its the look of an exploded diagram that changes my mind about taking on a task.

The diagram of a Winchester Model 12 is intimidating, it has to be the worst one I've ever seen. I'll end up getting the part manual too I reckon.

I get the idea they really don't want to sell these things. His inventory was behind the counter and he had to check what he had in stock and they were all shrink wrapped. I couldn't even find them listed on the HD website store.

I agree, they make it as difficult as possible to keep anyone from not bringing the bike to them. I understand not putting them out so customers could thumb through them or if I wanted an edition for an older bike but geez, they should have the 2018 edition in stock. That's the norm - they keep them behind the counter, if they even have them. Often, they'll have to order them for you, even for the current year models. Hey just don't sell enough of them to stock that many. And, as far as I know, they aren't listed in the Harley Website at all.

They're in the computer database, just like tools and parts.
