Anatomy Study Guides
A Zygote is the single diploid cell that results from fertilization, the first stage of the new individual's life. In the cleavage stage, the zygote has begun reproducing by mitosis, but the overall size of the embryo does not increase. In the morula stage, the cells of the embryo form a roughly spherical shape. In the blastula stage, a fluid-filled cavity forms in the middle of the embryo cells. The cells become either trophoblasts or part of the inner cell mass, which is the actual embryo. In the gastrula stage, the embryo changes shape, and the cells differentiate into the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. In the final stage, the neurula stage, the nervous system begins to form.
