Guide To English Literature

The Knowledge Notes series of study guides, in particular, are very helpful for undergraduates. The reference library also contains the introductions to the Penguin Classics books, very helpful for postgraduates too. Go to the library home page ( ) and mouse over 'Search & Find' and select 'Databases A-Z' Select under L in the A-Z list of databases. Click on Reference for a drop down menu.

Study Guide To English Literature

Both the Knowledge Notes guides and the Penguin Classics guides will be listed in A-Z order by author. Do not forget that we also have printed encyclopedias on English Literature on our print Reference shelves near the Information Desk (ask at the desk for help in finding them.) These often give a useful overview of particular authors, time periods (such as the Renaissance), literary movements (such as Modernism), or particular books or plays or poems. For more in-depth critical works on a chosen author or book, do not forget that the library book catalogue is an excellent source for finding books about books, as well as the original works. A simple keyword search such as Dickens AND Hard Times, will bring up lots of books about the Dickens' novel Hard Times, as well as the details for finding Hard Times itself.

It also helps to browse the shelves near the place where you have found the novel itself, since there may well be books which discuss that author, novel or period nearby.
